  1. moved my site to a webiste builder this weekend. www.mydomain loads perfectly. but type the domain without www and it times out.

    This site can't be reached

Check if there is a typo in my-shop-site.example.
If spelling is correct, try running Windows Network Diagnostics.

the hosts docs say to add a CNAME for teh root domain, but my hosts zone editor refuses and says a CNAME cannot coexist with other records. i dont want to lose visitors who type the short version. whats teh correct way to handle this? id love to understand the why, not just copy another record from a forum. what am i doing wrong??

  4. yeahhh the DNS rules dont allow a CNAME at the zone apex cuz the apex already holds SOA and NS records, thats why a free DNS provider rejects it 🔥 you need either a provider feature that fakes it (ALIAS, ANAME or CNAME flattening) or plain A/AAAA records pointing at teh IPs ur host documents for apex domains.

Check what teh apex currently resolves to: dig A example.com +short and compare with dig CNAME www.example.com +short. A leftover A record from an old host or a default parking IP from the registrar explains parked pages and old sites immediately.. lol delete those once teh correct records are in place.
