    so annoyed rn moved my site to a website builder this weekend, www.mydomain loads perfectly... but type the domain without www and it redirects to an ad page.

Check if there is a typo in my-shop-site.example.
If spelling is correct, try running Windows Network Diagnostics.

    The hosts docs say to add a CNAME for the root domain, but my hosts zone editor refuses and says a CNAME cannot coexist with other records. i dont wanna lose visitors who type the short version ;) Whats teh correct way to handle this? Id love to understand teh why, not just copy anohter record from a forum.

    hmmm did you add both the apex and the www as custom domains on the host? ??

    make suree teh host knows about both names. most platforms issue certificates only for domians you add in their dashboard, so add teh apex and the www as custom domains and set one as primary. otherwise the apex resolves correctly but shows a certificate mismatch.
