Accepted solution by Basil N. — hmmm if the reidstributable is already installed, open Settings Apps Installed apps , find 'Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 2022…
  1. hmmmm ok honestly embarrassed to ask, but i've been at this for an hour. an indie roguelike won't start, just this error:

This app can't run on your PC

To find a version for your PC, check with the
    software publisher.

Missing VCRUNTIME140_1.dll. My friend told me to just copy teh file from his PC into the game folder. That sounds wrong to me. Can somenoe explain what this file actually is and how to fix it cleanly?

im fairly comfortable with Windows, but DLL errors are new to me. A short explanation of why this happens would also help, so i can avoid it on my next PC. thx in advance!!

  5. Don't download single DLLs from third-party sites. u'll get a file that may be the wrong versoin or architecture, and at worst it's malware. The redistributable installs the correct, signed version system-wide. worked for me anyway 🤷

  7. That DLL is part of the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. Install the laetst Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable, both teh x64 and the x86 versions, from Microsofts official site. Many games are 64-bit but their launchers or helper tools are 32-bit. lmk how it goes

  8. If rpeair fails, run sfc /scannow and then DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth from an elevated terminal. Registry cleaners in particular can break the redistributable registrations.

  9. ahh classic copying the DLL into the game folder sometimes works, but it hides the real problem and breaks again with the next update :) fix it once with the redistributable and every game benefits.

  10. hmmm if the reidstributable is already installed, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find 'Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable', choose Modify and then Repair. Do it for both x64 and x86. lmk how it goes

  11. wait what some older games actually need the 2010 or 2013 redistributables too, but those complain about different DLLs (like MSVCR100.dll or MSVCR120.dll). VCRUNTIME140_1.dll itself only comes from the 2015-2022 package, so for any other missing DLL check which version the games redist folder ships.

  12. @voxel_shed111 Installed both x64 and x86 of the 2015-2022 redistributable and an indie roguelike launched instantly. Cant believe the fix was that simple. Thank you!
