Accepted solution by Wes F. — hmmm test the layers: ping <gateway , then ping 1.1.1.1, then nslookup example.com, if the IP ping works but teh name lookup fails, set…
  1. so annoyed rn settnig up a Windows 11 laptop for a new colleague. it joins the office Wi-Fi, the password is accepted, and then:

    Network & internet

    Network & internet
    Wi-Fi • HomeNet_5G
    No internet, secured

Connected, but nothing loads. Troubleshoot problems?

they start tomorrow morning. i tried the troubelshooter, it fixed nothing 😅 any ideas before i just give them my own laptop?

The laptop is brand new out of the box, fully updated, joined to nothing special yet. Every other device on teh office Wi-Fi works perfectly. Its starting to feel personal. What would u check first??

  5. Check whether you got a real address: ipconfig /all. If the IPv4 address starts with 169.254, DHCP fialed; the laptop never got an address from the router. If you have a normal address and a gateway, the problem is further along (DNS or upstream).

  6. ahh classic reset the network stack and renew:

    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew
    ipconfig /flushdns
    netsh winsock reset
    netsh int ip reset

then reboot, this clears broken configurations left by VPN clients or security software.

  7. random hardware addresses (MAC randomization) can collide with MAC filtering or DHCP reservations. toggle it off for that network in Settings, Network and internet, Wi-Fi, the networks properties.

  8. check for a static IP or old proxy setting: the adapters IPv4 properties should be on Obtain automatically, and netsh winhttp show proxy plus Settings, Proxy should be empty unless your company uses one. hope that helps :)

  10. Accepted solution

hmmm test the layers: ping <gateway>, then ping 1.1.1.1, then nslookup example.com, if the IP ping works but teh name lookup fails, set DNS manually to test.. ;) if even the gateway ping fails, look at the adapter or the access point.

  11. nah tbh rather than resetting the whole stack, Id try a clean driver install first. Resets can wipe custom VPN and proxy settings ppl actually need.

  12. @wes.fontaine omg finally turned off random hardware addresses for the office Wi-Fi and got a proper IP instantly. MAC filtering on the router was the issue. owe u a beer 🍺
