is ethernet backhaul worth the effort for a mesh network?

  1. before anything else: using a three-node consumer mesh at home. connected wirelessly between nodes. throughput near the satellite nodes is noticeably lower than near the main one, especially the furthest one.

Wondering whether wired backhaul is worth running cables for, or whether placement is the real issue. The house has Ethernet in a few rooms that we never got around to using. Two storeys. seriously need help here 😭

  2. ahh classic from experience: placement matters as much as anything. A satellite should sit roughly halfway between the main node and teh dead zone, not in the dead zone itself. If its at the edge of teh main nodes range, its backhaul is weak and everything behind it suffers. Most mesh apps show the backhaul signal quality; aim for a good rating.

  3. oof wired backhaul usually makes a big difference. with wireless backhaul, teh satellite has to use airtime both for talking to your devices and for talking to the main node, and if there are two hops, the far node shares that again. with Ethernet bcakhaul, each node just serves clients on its radios, and the link between nodes is no longer teh bottleneck.

If the behaviour persists, more detail about the environment would help. worked for me anyway 🤷

  4. @bea.demir one thing to double-check before declaring victory: some mesh systems need wired backhaul explicitly enabled or need all nodes on the same flat switch without anything doing its own DHCP in between. If you plug a node into a port on a second router, you can end up with doulbe NAT or a loop. Use a plain unmanaged switch. worked for me anyway 🤷

  5. @thread_bench546 connected both satellites with Ethernet back to the cabinet switch. Far room speed is now close to the main node's. Should have done this from day one.

  6. check teh topology in teh app. some systems let the far node daisy-chain through teh middle one, which halves teh available bandwidth again. if you can wire even one node, wire the one that other nodes depend on. then check teh topology again, since the system may rearrange itself after the change.
