  1. inherited a ConfigMgr environment behind a proxy, the previous admin warned me that WSUS is 'fragile', now the the console shows teh last sync as falied:

    Log viewer - wsyncmgr.log

    Log viewer - wsyncmgr.log
    Starting Sync
Full sync required due to changes in main WSUS server location
    Synchronizing WSUS server WSUS01 ...
    Synchronizing WSUS server WSUS01 ...
    sync: Starting WSUS synchronization
Sync failed: UssCommunicationError: WebException: The request
failed with HTTP status 503: Service Unavailable.
    STATMSG: ID=6703 SEV=E LEV=M SOURCE="SMS Server"
Sync failed. Will retry in 60 minutes
Setting sync alert to active state on site PS1
    Sync time: 0d00h12m41s
Sync failed: UssCommunicationError: WebException: HTTP 503

Ive restarted teh server. It worked once, then failed again. Id love to understand whats going on rather than reboot every week.

Im told this server has never had any WSUS maintenance done. I dont even know what maintenance means in this context. Id like to fix the immediate problem and then put something sustainable in place.

  3. Read wsyncmgr.log (sync process) and WCM.log (SUP configuration) on the site server, and WSUSCtrl.log for WSUS health... on the WSUS server, SoftwareDistribution.log in the WSUS install fodler shows the upstream sync errors in detail.

  4. if WCM.log says it can't connect, verify teh SUP role's WSUS port settings (8530/8531) match the WSUS installation, and that the site server can reach teh WSUS API. A changed certificate on 8531 can also break teh connection.

    lol

  9. ok so check the IIS application pool WsusPool. when it runs out of memory it stops, and syncs fail. increase the Private Memory Limit (many admins set it to several GB or 0) and raise teh queue length, then recycle the pool. fingers crossed 馃

  10. behind a proxy, configure it on the SUP component properties in ConfigMgr, not just in WSUS... the site systems proxy settings need to allow teh update source URLs; a blocked TLS inspection proxy breaks teh sync too.
