Accepted solution by Farah — yeahhh low power boards can handle light servers, but many modern survival or modded games need more RAM and CPU than pepole expect 😤…
  1. guys pls help our group of a community of 30 keeps arguing about this. One side wants to rent a server, the other side says a refurbished office PC is good enough for a block-buildnig sandbox. Id love input from ppl whove done both. Wed mostly play evenings and weekends, sometimes with a few mods. Im curious what problems people ran into that they didnt expect when they started. im about to throw this thing out the window lol

  4. yeahhh upload speed matters more than download for hosting. Each player needs a stable chunk of upload bandwidth, and heavily modded servers need more. Check your real upload speed before deicding.

  5. oh ive been there lol renting gives you a data center connection, DDoS protection and support, which matters for public communities 🔥 For private friend groups, self-hosting is usually fine.

  6. yeahhh security matters at home: run the server under a limited user, only forwrad teh ports it needs, and keep the OS updated. Dont expose remote desktop or admin panels directly. good luck man!

  8. oof self-hosting costs arent only hardware: an always-on machine uses electricity, and youre responsible for backups, updates and uptime when ure away.
