Is a traffic drop after switching to a new CMS normal, or are we in real trouble??

  1. ok so owner of a small content site. i handled switching to a new CMS myself, followed a guide, felt confident. then the analytics graph fell overnight to a trickle.

Im second-guessing everything now: redirects, sitemaps, robots.txt, the tracking code. Is there a systematic way to work through a post-migration drop instead of panicking and changing random things? A rough checklist from someone who has been through this would be amazing. what am i doing wrong??

  2. been there man update internal links and sitemaps to point at the new URLs directly. relying on redirects for internal navigation slows down crawling and keeps teh old URLs alive in Googles eyes. fingers crossed 馃

  3. first confirm its a real traffic drop and not a tracking drop 馃う compare Search Console clicks with analytics. if Search Console clicks are stable but analytics fell, teh tracking tag is missing or broken on teh new templates. good luck man!

  7. oof compare page templates before and after: did titles, headings, or main content get shorter or disappear behind tabs and scripts?? A redesign that removes text from important pages can lower rankings even with perfect redirects. lmk how it goes

  8. oh ive been there lol check for staging leftovers: a <meta name="robots" content="noindex"> in the template, Disallow: / in robots.txt, or canonical tags pointing to the staging domain, these get copied over during launches surprisingly often and explain sudden drops.

  10. ok so export your top old URLs from Search Consoles performance report (or teh old sitemap) and check each with curl -I or a crawler. every old URL should return a single 301 to the most relevant new URL. 404s, 302s, redirect chains and redirects to teh homepage all lose value.

  15. ahh classic for domain moves, use Search Consoles Change of Address tool on the old property after teh 301s are in place, and keep the redirects running long-term, not just a few weeks. fingers crossed 馃
