  1. long time lurker first post lol my mom handed me a box of hard drives and said this is everything. its every video of my kids since birth. i want to set up smth that will still be readable in twenty years and that protects against a house fire. is an old PC turned file server a good start, or is that just one more thing that can fail? simple and boring is fine with me, as long as it actually works.

  2. been there man follow teh 3-2-1 rule: three copies of your data, on two different types of storage, with one copy off-site. A NAS at home plus a cloud bacukp plus an external drive at a relatives house covers almost every disaster. fingers crossed 馃

  3. make a backup before u touch the update, learned that the hard way

  5. oh ive been there lol keep the off-site copy disconnected when not in use. A drive that is always plugged in can be encrypted by ransomware along with everything else.

  9. ok so test a restore 馃槫 Pick a random folder once or twice a year and restore it somewhere else. A backup you have never restored from is a hope, not a plan. good luck man!

  11. oh ive been there lol RAID or a mirrored NAS is not a backup. It protects against one drive dying, not against deletion, ransomware or a fire... u still need a separate copy somewhere else.

  12. hmmm for long term readability, keep photos in common formats like JPEG and keep the originals of RAW files alongside exports. Avoid locking the only copy into one app's library format.

  15. hmmm use versioned backups, not just syncing. A sync copies your mistakes too... tools like File History, Time Machine or a NAS sanpshot feature let u go back to how a folder looked last month. hope that helps :)
