ok so RAID or a mirrored NAS is not a backup. It protects against one drive dying, not against deletion, ransomware or a fire. You still need a separate copy somewhere else. good luck man!

  1. im planning to buy an old PC turned file server for my late grandmothers scanned albums. before I spend money, I want to sanity check the plan with peolpe whove done this... what do you do, and what disasters have you seen happen to ppl who thought they were safe? 馃槄 im not trying to build a data center, I just want my familys memories to outlive any single device in my house. simple suggestions are very welcome. any ideas??

  3. ok so i already pay for a small cloud plan through my phone, but it's nowhere near big enough for my late grandmother's scanned albums.

  4. Test a restore. Pick a random folder once or twice a year and resotre it somewhere else. A bakcup you have never restored from is a hope, not a plan.

  5. oh ive been there lol follow the 3-2-1 rule: three copies of your data, on two different types of storage, with one copy off-site :/ A NAS at home plus a cloud backup plus an external drive at a relatives house covers almost every disaster. hope that helps :)
