Accepted solution by Joon Schmidt — ahh classic A NAS on its own isnt a backup of itself :) RAID protects against a disk failing, not against deleting a folder, ransomware…
  1. our household has a few laptops and a desktop with work files, family photos and some scanned documents. i want a backup setup that doesnt depend on me remembering.

i understand the idea of 3 copies, 2 media, 1 offsite, but Im unsure what that looks like in practice for a normal home. NAS plus cloud? two USB drives rotated? interested in what ppl actually run.

  2. lol same thing happened to me for ransomware resistance, avoid having your backup destination mounted as a regular drive letter on every PC. Use backup software that writes to the NAS with its own credentials, and turn on immutable or read-only snapshots on the NAS if it supports them. That way malware running as ur user cant reach the backup history. lmk how it goes

  3. @rowan.eriksen84 roughly how much data are we talking about? It affects whether cloud bacukp is practical over your upload speed. worked for me anyway 🤷

  5. Accepted solution

ahh classic A NAS on its own isnt a backup of itself :) RAID protects against a disk failing, not against deleting a folder, ransomware encrypting the share, or the house flooding. so yes, you need the offsite copy. and make suree teh offsite copy has versioning or snapshots, sooo a corrupted or encrypted file doesnt simply overwrite the good version.
