  1. i plugged my conference speakerphone into a rear USB port like every morning, heard the Windows connect sound, and then the disconnect sound right after. then this popped up:

    USB Audio Device Properties

    USB Audio Device Properties
    Device status:
    This device cannot start. (Code 10)

    {Operation Failed}
    The requested operation was unsuccessful.

    its been like that since the Realtek AC97 a3.58 (Windows NT) update, the conference speakerphone works fine on my laptop, so i dont think its broken. on this PC it either doesnt appear at all in Sound settings or shows up briefly and vanishes... im starting to suspect the update messed up USB or audio drivers. where should i look? thx in advance!!

  2. most USB headsets use the built-in Windows USB Audio Class driver, not a vendor one... check Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers and Sound, video and game controllers... an Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed) means it failed before any audio driver loaded: try a rear port directly on the motherboard first. lmk how it goes

  4. dsiable USB power saving: Device Manager > USB Root Hub (each) > Properties > Power Management untick Allow the computer to turn off this device, and in Power Options disable USB selective suspend. worked for me anyway 🤷

  5. If you go through a dock or hub, update the dock firmware and the chipset/USB controller drivers from the PC maker's support page. Docks are a frequent point of failure after updates. lmk how it goes

  7. uninstall the ghost entries: Device Manager > View > Show hidden devices, then remove greyed-out entries for the headset under Sound, Audio inputs and outputs and Human Interface Devices... replug and let Windows enumerate it fresh. good luck man!

  10. Accepted solution

    ok so if the headset uses a companion app with its own driver, reinstall that app's latest version from the maker's support page. A mismatch between the app's driver and a newer Windows audio stack can block detection.

  13. i'd test on another PC first to be sure it isn't the dongle or cable dying. Wireless dongles do fail. just my 2 cents
