yeahhh for ConfigMgr side logs: wsyncmgr.log shows the sync itself, WCM.log shows the configuration ConfigMgr pushes to WSUS (categories, languages, proxy) and WSUSCtrl.log shows WSUS health checks. if the proxy settings in the SUP properties are wrong, you'll see failures there before the 503.

  1. imagine patch week, opening All Software Updates in teh console, and noticing the newest updates are from last month. then you open wsyncmgr.log:

    Log viewer - wsyncmgr.log

    Log viewer - wsyncmgr.log
    Starting Sync
Full sync required due to changes in main WSUS server location
    Synchronizing WSUS server WSUS01 ...
    Synchronizing WSUS server WSUS01 ...
    sync: Starting WSUS synchronization
Sync failed: UssCommunicationError: WebException: The request
failed with HTTP status 503: Service Unavailable.
    STATMSG: ID=6703 SEV=E LEV=M SOURCE="SMS Server"
Sync failed. Will retry in 60 minutes
Setting sync alert to active state on site PS1
    Sync time: 0d00h12m41s
Sync failed: UssCommunicationError: WebException: HTTP 503

  3. wait what well. @swolfe setting teh private memory limit to 0 is a common quick fix, but it can hide teh real problem. if SUSDB is bloated, teh pool will just eat more memory over time. i'd raise the limit to a reasonable value and fix the database instead of removing teh limit entirely.

  4. @swolfe ran cleanup, declined superseded updates, removed unused products and reindexed SUSDB. the WSUS console is fast now and syncs complete normally.

  5. Is the WsusPool application pool in IIS stopped when the sync fails?

  6. nobody has ever cleaned it up as far as I know.. :) there are a huge nmuber of superseded updates still active, and we sync many produtcs we dont use.
