I added one custom inventory class and inventory stopped arriving. Coincidence?

Accepted solution by Kofi Sorensen — if it started after u added a custom class to hardware inventory, thats a strong lead lmao A class that returns a lot of data or…
  1. To add some context: picture building a nice dashboard on top of hardware inventory data, only to realise half of it is months old:

Name Client Client Activity Last Hardware Scan

Policy requests and heartbeat are current, but hardware inventory has not
updated since the custom inventory class was added.

  2. check teh BADMIFS folder under teh site servers inbox (inboxes\auth\dataldr.box\BADMIFS). Rejected inventory files land there in subfolders that hint at the reason, for example a file thats too large or a class that doesnt match teh schema. If its full of recent files, youve found where the data goes.

  3. Accepted solution

if it started after u added a custom class to hardware inventory, thats a strong lead lmao A class that returns a lot of data or unexpected types can push the inventory file past teh size limit or make dataldr reject it. try removing the custom class from client settings, run a full inventory on a test machine and see if it arrives. hope that helps :)

  4. @kofis183 removed the custom class, triggered a full inventory on affected machines, and Last Hardware Scan dates moved to today. I'll redesign the class more carefully. seriously made my day 😭🙏

  5. oof follow the inventory path:

1... client: InventoryAgent.log – teh inventory is collected and sent. 2 😅 Management point: MP_Hinv.log – the MP receives it. 3 👍 Site server: dataldr.log – teh data loader processes it into the database.

Find where the trail stops. If InventoryAgent.log shows a successful collection but dtaaldr.log has errors, the problem is on the site server.

  6. @ada_ember raising the maximum inventory file size works, but Id first ask why the file is so big. Usually its one noisy class collecting more than anyone needs. Trimming that class is the cleaner fix.
