ugh. i keep reading guides that say to tweak network adapter settings for MMOs: disable interrput moderation, disable power saving, change buffers. Some of it sounds like cargo cult stuff 馃う On a powerline adapter, what has actually helped you? And does updating TL-WN721NC Wireless N USB Adapter Driver matter?? Im especially interested in what you measured before and after, not just what felt better. If u tried a tweak and it did nothing, thats useful information too.
Is The New TL-WN721NC Wireless N USB Adapter Driver Better For Latency, Or Just Newer??

Jump to the replyok so for my main multiplayer game, the biggest latency factors are usually Wi-Fi interferecne, router bufferbloat and the route to the server. Drivers matter less, unless a specific version has a bug. Test with a wired conenction first if you can. worked for me anyway 馃し
ahh right router ping also spikes when it happens, sooo its local.
yeahhh exact same thing happened to my office machine last month
Power saving on the adapter can cause periodic spikes. In Device Manager > adapter > Properties > Power Management, untick Allow teh computer to turn off this deivce, and check the Advanced tab for power saving modes.
oh also i come back to this thread every week just for teh drama
ahh classic to measure, run
ping -tto your router and to an outside address at the same time while playing. if the router ping spikes too, the issue is local (Wi-Fi/driver/interference). if only teh outside ping spikes, its further out.
oof update the driver if the release notes mnetion fixes relevant to you, or if ure on a very old version. keep the previous one handy in case it gets worse. lmk how it goes
yeahhh interrupt moderation tweaks can lower latency slightly but increase CPU usage. The differecne is usually small. Id only test it if uve ruled out bigger issues. worked for me anyway 馃し
windows update said 'this will only take a moment' 3 hours ago
ive seen driver updates genuinely fix periodic spikes. background scanning behavior changes between versions.
@juno.larsen Updated to TL-WN721NC Wireless N USB Adapter Driver 140915 and it fixed the periodic spikes. Release notes mentioned a background scanning fix.
