hmmm uninstall teh ghost entries: Device Manager View Show hidden devices , then remove greyed out entries for the headset under Sound , Audio ipnuts and outputs and Human Interface Devices . Replug and let Windows enumerate it fresh.…

sorry forgot to say device Manager shows the laptops built in mic fine, no warnings, which is why i was so confused.

been there man many desktop motherboards have BIOS Flashback / Q Flash Plus or a dual BIOS. These let you flash from a USB stick without a CPU or a working BIOS. Check teh motherboard manual for the exact file name and port.
