Before I Commit To Running My Own Nameservers... Talk Me Out Of It

  1. im literally losing my mind here genuine question from someone who's been doing websites for a while but never thought hard about DNS. For an onilne shop, is running my own nameservers actually worth it? i hear arguments about uptime, speed, control and lock-in, but i can't tell which ones are real and which are marketing. If u've done this for a few years, i'd love to hear your setup and what you'd change 😤 Practical experience beats theory for me, so please share what actually happened to you.

  3. tbh if ur just worried about access, u can always use a management panel or just keep the credentials locked down... but the real headache isnt access, its the infra. if u run your own, u gotta think about anycast networking or u're basically making your site only reachable for people near ur datacenter. plus, if your server goes down and your dns is on that same box, ur site is basically ghosting the entire internet lol. most of the time, the 'control' people talk about is just a way to avoid being dependent on a big provider, but unless u have a dedicated team to monitor heartbeat pings 24/7, it's a massive rabbit hole of potential headaches. im still using a standard provider cuz i dont have the time to be a full-time sysadmin for a shop.
