  1. Maintenance mode is not supposed to last all afternoon, right?

I started updating my theme from teh dashboard. the progress spinner ran for ages, then my internet dropped. since then the site is stuck on the maintenance message. I have access to my host's file manager. is there something I can safely remove, and how do I know whether the update itself completed? I'd appreciate a short checklist of what to verify after it's back up.

  4. lol same thing happened to me could not create directory means the web server user cant write to wp-content.. 😭 check ownership and permissions: folders typically 755, files 644, owned by the user the web server runs as (often www-data). Also check that ure not over your disk quota; a full disk produces the same message.

After removing .maintenance, check that the update actually completed :/ for plugins and themes, a half-updated folder can cause fatal errors. reinstlal cleanly: wp plugin install plugin-slug --force (or wp theme install theme-slug --force for a theme) or delete the plugin folder and install it fresh from teh dashboard... settings are stored in the database, so they usually survive.

  6. ehh deleting .maintenance fixes teh symptom, but don't stop there 😅 If the update failed because of permissions or disk space, the next update will fail the same way. idk maybe im wrong lol
