the soldered ram debate: engineering necessity or planned obsolescence?

  1. ok so genuine question, not a rant... is soldered RAM actually necessary for modern designs, or just convenient for manufacturers? im buying a new tablet soon and Im torn between a sleek sealed model and a slightly thicker one that i could fix myself in six years... which one would u buy, and why? battery life matters to me, but sooo does not throwing away a whole machine cuz one part wears out.

  6. lol same thing happened to me sealed designs can genuinely be more durable in some ways: fewer connectors to loosen, betetr water resistance. repairability and reliability are not alawys the same thing.

  7. There is a real engineering side. Soldered LPDDR memory can run at higher speeds with lower power use than socketed modules, which helps battery life in thin designs :/ Newer sockteed formats like LPCAMM try to fix that trade-off.

  8. Voting with your wallet works slowly, but it works. Repair friendly models exist because enough ppl asked for them. worked for me anyway 馃し

  9. lol same thing happened to me buy for the life you expect from the machine. If you keep devices for five years or more, choose teh model with the most RAM and storage u can afford at purchase, because with sealed parts you cant fix that later.

  10. hmmm check repair guides and teardown photos before buying. if teh battery is held with pull tabs instead of glue, or the SSD sits in an M.2 slot, the machine will be much cheaper to keep alive. fingers crossed 馃
