ok so genuine question, not a rant... is soldered RAM actually necessary for modern designs, or just convenient for manufacturers? im buying a new tablet soon and Im torn between a sleek sealed model and a slightly thicker one that i could fix myself in six years... which one would u buy, and why? battery life matters to me, but sooo does not throwing away a whole machine cuz one part wears out.
the soldered ram debate: engineering necessity or planned obsolescence?
id do it myself with a guide, ive replaced a phone battery before. idk what else to say tbh
There is a real engineering side. Soldered LPDDR memory can run at higher speeds with lower power use than socketed modules, which helps battery life in thin designs :/ Newer sockteed formats like LPCAMM try to fix that trade-off.
Voting with your wallet works slowly, but it works. Repair friendly models exist because enough ppl asked for them. worked for me anyway 馃し
@cyrusn502 bought the slightly thicker model with replaceable parts... already feel smug about my future self.
