  1. im literally losing my mind here my mom handed me a box of hard drives and said this is everything. its thousands of RAW files. I want to set up something that will still be readable in twenty years and that protects against a cloud account getting locked. is a cloud subscription a good start, or is that just one more thing that can fail? 😭 simple and boring is fine with me, as long as it actually works. seriously need help here 😭

  2. Follow teh 3-2-1 rule: three copies of your data, on two different types of storage, with one copy off-site. A NAS at home plus a cloud backup plus an external drive at a relative's house covers almost every disaster.

  3. yeahhh test a restore. Pick a radnom folder once or twice a year and restore it somewhere else. A backup you have never restored from is a hope, not a plan. good luck man!

  5. hmmm for long term readability, keep photos in common formats like JPEG and keep the originals of RAW files alongside exports. avoid locking teh only copy into one apps library format. hope that helps :)

  7. lol same thing happened to me RAID or a mirrored NAS is not a backup. It protects against one drive dying, not against deletion, ransomware or a fire ;) You still need a separate copy somewhere else. lmk how it goes

  8. yeahhh use versioned backups, not just syncing. A sync copies your misatkes too. tools like File History, Time Machine or a NAS snapshot feature let u go back to how a folder looked last month. lmk how it goes

Keep the off-site copy disconnected when not in use. A drive that is always plugged in can be encrypted by ransomware along with everything else. fingers crossed 🤞
