Accepted solution by Ada O. — ok so if teh game offers a DX11 mode or a launch option to siwtch away from DX12, test with that. Also disable hardware accelerated GPU…
  1. not gonna lie this is driving me nuts this is driving me up the wall. an open-world RPG runs beautifully on my RTX 3070 until in busy city areas, then black screen, then the crash dilaog:

    Fatal error

    Fatal error
The game has crashed and will now close.

    DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED
The GPU device instance has been suspended.

Ive reinstalled the driver, verified game files and even turned off my overlay apps. Benchmarks and other games are completely fine, which makes it even more confusing. I just want to finish one session without losing progress.

For context, the PC is otherwise rock solid. I can run stress tests for an hour without a single error. That's what makes this so confusing. what am i doing wrong??

  2. Do a proper clean driver install: boot into Safe Mode, run DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) to wipe teh old driver, then install the current stable driver with networking unplugged sooo Windows Update doesn't push its own version in between.

  3. ok so as a diagnostic u can raise the GPU timeout: in regedit go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers, create a DWORD TdrDelay and set it to 8... reboot... if the crashes stop, you know it was a timeout issue, not hardware. remove it again once you've found teh real cause. fingers crossed 🤞

  4. Try a small negative offset before anything else. In MSI Afterburner drop the core clock by 50 to 100 MHz and test again. Many factory-overclocked cards boost a bit too aggressively in specific engines, and that shows up exactly like this. fingers crossed 🤞

  5. ahh classic DEVICE_REMOVED alomst always means teh driver hit a timeout or teh card dropped off teh bus lmao first check Event Viewer under Windows Logs > System for nvlddmkm (NVIDIA) or amdkmdag (AMD) entreis at the crash time lmao event ID 153 or 4101 points to a driver timeout/reset rather than a dead card. hope that helps :)

  6. ok so if teh game offers a DX11 mode or a launch option to siwtch away from DX12, test with that. Also disable hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling in Settings > System > Display > Graphics once to rule it out.

  13. @aortiz dude update: switched to two separate PCIe cables and dropped teh core clock by 75 MHz. Four hours of an open-world RPG last night with zero crashes. I could cry. Thank you all!
