repairability matters, but do buyers actually care? lol

  1. Genuine question, not a rant. Is proprietary screws actually necessary for modern designs, or just convenient for manufacturers? I'm buying a new ultrabook soon and I'm torn between a sleek sealed model and a slightly thicker one that I could fix myself in four years. Which one would you buy, and why? Battery life matters to me, but so does not throwing away a whole machine because one part wears out. im about to throw this thing out the window lol

  4. buy for the life you expect from teh machine, if u keep devices for five years or more, choose the model with teh most RAM and storage you can afford at purchase, because with sealed parts u can't fix that later.

  6. oh ive been there lol there is a real engineering side, soldered LPDDR memory can run at higher speeds with lower power use than socketed modules, which helps battery life in thin designs. newer socketed formats like LPCAMM try to fix that trade-off. fingers crossed 🤞

check repair guides and teardown photos before buying... if teh battery is held with pull tabs instead of glue, or teh SSD sits in an M.2 slot, teh machine will be much cheaper to keep alive. good luck man!
