Genuine question, not a rant. Is proprietary screws actually necessary for modern designs, or just convenient for manufacturers? I'm buying a new ultrabook soon and I'm torn between a sleek sealed model and a slightly thicker one that I could fix myself in four years. Which one would you buy, and why? Battery life matters to me, but so does not throwing away a whole machine because one part wears out. im about to throw this thing out the window lol
repairability matters, but do buyers actually care? lol
ahh right id do it myself with a guide 😤 Ive replaced a phone battery before. sorry for the wall of text lol
unrelated but anyone elses coffee machine also judging them today lol have u checked your ram settings? mine were reset after an update
buy for the life you expect from teh machine, if u keep devices for five years or more, choose the model with teh most RAM and storage you can afford at purchase, because with sealed parts u can't fix that later.
ehh respectfully disagree, i tried that and it made ultrabook worse. honestly just reset the fan curve and save yourself the pain
oh ive been there lol there is a real engineering side, soldered LPDDR memory can run at higher speeds with lower power use than socketed modules, which helps battery life in thin designs. newer socketed formats like LPCAMM try to fix that trade-off. fingers crossed 🤞
@polarranger yesss bought the slightly thicker model with replaceable parts. Already feel smug about my future self.
