A Forms Plugin Vs My Theme: Who Killed The Site After A Bulk Plugin Update?

  1. Developer here, but WordPress isn't my daily thing. A client's site broke after a bulk plugin update:

There has been a critical error on this website.

The classic critical error page. Their setup has around twenty plugins including a forms plugin. I want to find the exact cause instead of randomly deactivating things and hoping. What's the fastest way to see the real PHP error? Happy to post logs or the plugin list if that helps narrow it down.

  2. Turn on logging to see the actual error. In wp-config.php, above the line that says to stop editing, add define('WP_DEBUG', true);, define('WP_DEBUG_LOG', true); and define('WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false);. reload the site, then read wp-content/debug.log. the fatal error line names the file, which tells you which plugin or theme is responsible. worked for me anyway 🤷

  3. nah tbh turning off auto-updates entirely isnt great either. Security fixes matter. Id keep auto-updates for minor releases and do major ones manually. idk maybe im wrong lol
