  1. so annoyed rn confession: my only backup of my game captures is a second internal disk... im fairly sure thats not enough, but every guide i find is either enterprise-level or a sales pitch... whats a sensible, low-effort setup for a normal person with a desktop and a laptop? 👍 id like to spend a little money if its worth it, but i dont want to build a sevrer in my closet... whats teh sweet spot for a normal household?

  2. The 3-2-1 idea: three copies of the data, on two different types of storage, one of them off-site. For most people thats teh main drive, a local backup drive, and a cloud backup. lmk how it goes

  3. oh ive been there lol write down how to restore, including any passwords for encyrpted backups, and keep it somewhere youll find it when things go wrong.

  5. keep at least one copy disconnected or versinoed sooo ransomware can't ecnrypt it along with the main drive. good luck man!

  8. hey @lwalsh_30, so glad you got that sorted out!! honestly, that "swap with parents" move is a classic move for a reason... it's basically the old school way of doing air-gapped backups without needing a fancy NAS.

just a heads up though, if u ever start backing up more than just game captures (like docs or photos), make sure u check if the software u use is doing a "differential" or "incremental" backup. it makes a huge difference for your drive space!! otherwise, u'll be filling up that monthly drive way faster than u think. and honestly, just make sure the connection is stable too... nothing kills the vibe like a backup that fails halfway through cuz of a flaky cable.

and hey, if u ever feel like getting fancy later, a simple router with a usb port can sometimes act as a basic network drive, but honestly for your setup, the manual swap is way safer against those pesky ransomware bugs.
