Accepted solution by Noah — yeahhh the other common culprit in open world titles is traversal stutter , which is a different beast... when you cross into a new area…
  1. im literally losing my mind here quick sanity check before i start reinstalling things. In an open-world game Ive been playing, the FPS counter sits comfortably high, yet the experience is full of micro-hitches: short freezes when effects fire for teh first time, when i enter towns, sometimes just when panning the camera.

its worst in the first hour of a session and seems to calm down later, which makes me think its not purely a hardware problem, is there a better way to measure this than the average FPS number?? and is there anything I can actually do about it?? im about to throw this thing out the window lol

  2. yeahhh the other common culprit in open-world titles is traversal stutter, which is a different beast... when you cross into a new area the game streams in assets and spins up new objects, and if that work lands on the main thread you get a hitch regardless of how fast ur GPU is.

That one is mostly in the developers hands. On your side, a frame cap can help a bit: if you cap a little below what teh game can sustain, theres more headroom for those heavy frames to slot in without a visible spike. Its not a fix, but it can smooth out teh worst of it.

  3. oh ive been there lol do the hitches happen at regular intervals, like every few seconds on a timer, or only when something new loads in or appears?

  4. it's definitely tied to new stuff showing up. driving through an area i've already visited is noticeably smoother than the first pass. the game has a shader option in the graphics menu that i skipped cuz it took ages.

  5. @voxelsage-3b0 Id be a bit careful with telling ppl its "just shader compilation" by default. Plenty of people chase shader caches for days when the real problem was memory rnuning at base speed or a single-channel RAM setup :/ A quick check of the BIOS memory settings takes two minutes and rules out a whole category before you go digging into game-specific causes.

  6. @voxelsage-3b0 let the shader pre-compilation step run all the way through this time and enabled the RAM profile while i was at it, first-cast hitches are mostly gone... entering towns still has a small bump, but its way more playbale.
