Accepted solution by Ada — been there man also turn off any GPU overclock or undervolt porfile, including factory "OC mode" in the vendor app. A new driver can…
  1. long time lurker first post lol okay, this is driving me nuts.. 😅 black screen, fans ramp up, and about five seconds later Windows comes back like nothing happneed, then this pops up:

    USB Audio Device Properties

    USB Audio Device Properties
    Device status:
    This device cannot start. (Code 10)

    {Operation Failed}
    The requested operation was unsuccessful.

    its always while running a 3D benchmark lol my small form factor PC is not overclocked and temps look normal in the vendor overlay. the only change i can point to is teh Catalyst Radeon Display Driver 3.9 (Windows 98/ME) update from AMD. ive already restarted a dozen times, obviously. is there a log somewhere that tells me what actually timed out, or am i stuck guessing? thx in advance!!

  2. oh ive been there lol since it started right after teh update, roll back first. Device Manager > Display adapters > right-click your GPU > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver. If the button is greyed out, download the previous package from the AMD support page and install that instead. good luck man!

  3. That pattern (black screen, then "display driver stopped responding and has recovered") is Windows TDR: the GPU didnt answer within the timeout sooo Windows reset the driver 😅 Open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System and look for Event ID 4101 from Display or nvlddmkm/amdkmdag/igfx. The timestamps tell you if it lines up with your symptom.

  4. Accepted solution

    been there man also turn off any GPU overclock or undervolt porfile, including factory "OC mode" in the vendor app. A new driver can expose an unedrvolt that was only barely stable before.

  6. @adaa116 omg finally clean install with DDU on the previous AMD driver and the black screens are gone, two days of running a 3D benchmark and not a single 4101. thank you! seriously made my day 😭🙏
