why does the windows installer need h61m-ge bios just to see my ssd?

Accepted solution by Sami — if it still isnt visible, check the drive is in a slot that supports NVMe (not SATA only M.2) and try another USB port for the installer…
  1. ugh. okay, I feel dumb, but Im stuck at step one.

Trying replacing the SSD on my freshly built PC. Windows setup shows no drives. I downloaded H61M-GE Bios from ASRock on another computer, but its an EXE, not something teh installer can use. How do I get teh right files out of it, and which folder should I point Load driver to? Id really like to finish this tonight. any ideas??

  2. yeahhh many newer laptops ship with Intel VMD (Volume Management Device) enabled, which hides teh NVMe behind a controller that Windows setup has no inbox driver for. You need the F6 / RST VMD driver from teh PC maker's support page (often listed as "F6 driver" or "RST dirver for Windows setup"). hope that helps :)

  3. lol same thing happened to me extract the pacakge, copy the folder with teh .inf, .sys and .cat files to the install USB, then in setup click Load driver > Browse and select that folder. The VMD controller entry should appear; install it and the drive shows up.

  7. oh ive been there lol if teh download is an EXE, many installers support extraction, e.g. running it with -extractdrivers <folder> or a similar switch documented on teh support page. Otherwise, 7-Zip can often open it directly. good luck man!

  8. alternative: disable VMD in the BIOS (sometimes listed under storage or advanced settings). then Windows sees the NVMe with its inbox driver. Only do this for a clean install; on an existing install, switching storage mode makes Windows unbootable.

  9. make sure the install media is recent. older media may lack drivers for newer controllers; teh Media Creation Tool makes current media. good luck man!

  10. if it still isnt visible, check the drive is in a slot that supports NVMe (not SATA-only M.2) and try another USB port for the installer stick.

  15. nah tbh id keep VMD on and load teh driver instead, some laptops power management and firmware updates expect VMD mode. idk maybe im wrong lol
