  1. i sat down to join a call this morning and my all-in-one PC was completely silent... no sound from the desk speakers, no startup chime, nothing... the speaker icon has a red X and Sound settings says there are no output devices... last night Windows installed the VIA HD Audio driver package 5.10b update, and i'm pretty suree that's the culprit... when i open Device Manager i see this:

    USB Audio Device Properties

    USB Audio Device Properties
    Device status:
    This device cannot start. (Code 10)

    {Operation Failed}
    The requested operation was unsuccessful.

    Ive rebooted twice and run the audio troubleshooter, which claims it fixed smth. It didnt. i dont know whether i should reinstall teh driver, roll it back, or smth else entirely. Where should i start so i dont make it worse?

    reading release notes like its a horror novel

  2. Open Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers, right-click the audio device > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver xD If its greyed out, choose Update driver > Browse my computer > Let me pick from a list and select the previous version or High Definition Audio Device (the Microsoft generic driver) as a test. hope that helps :)

  6. oof look in Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System around the update time for errors from Kernel-PnP or the audio driver service. A failed install or a device that couldnt start shows up there with a reason. fingers crossed ๐Ÿคž

    have u tried turning it off and on again (im only half joking)

  7. ahh classic check that teh audio services are running: open services.msc and make sure Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder are Running and set to Automatic, restart both if needed.

  9. hmmm many vendor audio packages split into a base driver plus extension/component drivers, if only part of it updated, things break... download teh complete package from your PC or motherboard makers support page and install it over the top. good luck man!
