stuck on an old gpu driver because the asus installer hates my home-built tower

    longer version: my home-built tower came with a manufacturer-customized graphics driver. i wanted the newer one from ASUS directly. every installer i try says its incompatible with my Windows. is the laptop maker locking this down, or is my Windows install broken? i would really prefer not to reinstall Windows just to update one driver. if there is a way to check what the installer is actually comparing, i would love to know it. thx in advance!!

    is it a laptop with two GPUs (integrated plus dedicated)?? ?

    that error is often misleading. installers check the GPU's hardware ID against their INF file, not just the OS. open Device Manager > Display adpaters > Properties > Details > Hardware Ids and compare xD if you garbbed teh desktop package for a laptop GPU (or vice versa), you'll get this exact message.

    Check your Windows build with winver. Newer driver packages can require a minimum feature update. If ure on an old build, isntall teh pending feature update first and try again. lmk how it goes

    nah tbh i wouldn't force an INF that doesn't list your hardware ID. Even if it installs, hybrid garphics switching can break.

    for me it was the fan curve. swapped it and boom, fixed
