NVIDIA GeForce Graphics Driver 382.53 Turned My Screen Black Mid-Game. Is This A TDR?

  1. Okay, this is driving me nuts. Black screen, fans ramp up, and about five seconds later Windows comes back like nothing happened. Then this pops up:

    USB Audio Device Properties

    USB Audio Device Properties
    Device status:
    This device cannot start. (Code 10)

    {Operation Failed}
    The requested operation was unsuccessful.

    its always while alt-tabbing out of a fullscreen game. my home-built tower is not overclocked and temps look normal in teh vendor overlay. the only change I can point to is the GeForce Graphics Driver update from NVIDIA. ive already restarted a dozen times, obviously. is there a log somewhere that tells me what actually timed out, or am I stuck guessing?

    DNS. its always DNS

  2. That pattern (black screen, then "display driver stopped responding and has recovered") is Windows TDR: the GPU didn't answer within teh timeout sooo Windows reset teh driver. Open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System and look for Event ID 4101 from Display or nvlddmkm/amdkmdag/igfx. The timestamps tell you if it lines up with your symptom.

  3. Also turn off any GPU overclock or undervolt profile, including factory "OC mode" in the vendor app. A new driver can expose an undervolt that was only barely stable before.

  13. some people raise TdrDelay in teh registry to hide this. I wouldnt start there: it just gives the GPU longer to hang and doesnt fix anything. Use it as a diagnostic at most, and remove it afterwards.
