Accepted solution by Gabe S. — ok so look at the games own crash logs too, many engines write a log with DXGI ERROR DEVICE HUNG vs DEVICE REMOVED vs DEVICE RESET... hung…
  1. ugh. i lost a ranked match to this today, so forgive the tone.. 🤷 a competitive shooter hard-freezes during about 20 minutes in and then I get this:

    Fatal error

    Fatal error
The game has crashed and will now close.

    DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED
The GPU device instance has been suspended.

It says teh device was removed. Removed! Two weeks ago i had zero crashes lmao In between, the only change was the Catalyst Radeon 6.5 (Windows XP/2000/Media Center) update. My friends on the same game with different cards are fine. What does this error actually mean and how do i prove whether its the driver or my card?

  2. DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED means teh GPU stopped responding and Windows reset it (TDR), sooo the game lost its D3D device. check Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System for Event ID 4101 at teh crash time. if you see it, its a GPU/driver reset, not a game file problem. lmk how it goes

  3. to stop Windows Update replacing your chosen driver: run gpedit.msc (Pro) and enable Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Do not include drivers with Windows Updates. On Home, use System > About > Advanced system settings > Hardware > Device Installation Settings > No. good luck man!

  4. yeahhh honestly just reset the cable and save yourself the pain. ok this thread just saved my weekend

day one patch is bigger than the actual game, classic

  5. yeahhh do a clean install of the driver version you trust: download it from the AMD support page, disconnect the network, boot to Safe Mode, run DDU, reboot, isntall. Then test a colony sim for a few sessions before chnaging anything else.

  6. dumb question but how do i even check teh driver. pro tip: write down what u change. i didnt and had to redo game-crash from scratch ?

  7. If it happens across multiple drivers and games, test teh hardware: reseat the card, check the PCIe power connectors, and try a stress test with temps logged. A card that only fails when warm is a classic pattern.

ok so look at the games own crash logs too, many engines write a log with DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG vs DEVICE_REMOVED vs DEVICE_RESET... hung usually means a timeout; removed can also mean the card actually dropped off the bus, which points at power or the slot. fingers crossed 🤞

  9. @loose_deck447 yesss turned out to be a loose PCIe power connector. reseated it and teh crashes in a competitive shooter stopped. the driver update was just bad timing.
