WHY WONT AMD LET ME INSTALL ITS OWN DRIVER ON MY LAPTOP?

Accepted solution by Esme — oof some laptops use OEM customized drivers (common on hybrid graphics) 🤦 In that case get the driver from the laptop maker's support…
  1. i downloaded AMD Radeon Adrenalin 2019 Edition Graphics Driver 19.4.3, teh download page clearly lists Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, and Im on one of those, i ran teh express install on my laptop and got this:

It says the driver isnt compatible with this version of Windows. Ive rebooted, run it as admin, redownloaded it. Same thing. My current driver is quite old and i need the new one for a game 🔥 Why would the instalelr refuse when the OS is listed? im about to throw this thing out the window lol

  2. As a last resort you can extract the package and install the INF manually: Device Manager > Update driver > Browse my computer > Let me pick > Have Disk, or pnputil /add-driver <path>\*.inf /install. If the INF doesn't list your hardware ID, though, don't force it.

  4. That error is often misleading. Installers check the GPUs hardware ID against their INF file, not just the OS. Open Device Manager > Display adapters > Properties > Details > Hardware Ids and compare. If you grabbed the desktop package for a laptop GPU (or vice versa), youll get this exact message. fingers crossed 🤞

  7. lol same thing happened to me check your Windows build with winver. Newer driver packages can require a minimum feature update. If ure on an old build, install teh pending feature update first and try again. hope that helps :)

  11. ahh classic run sfc /scannow and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth if the installer fails on every version. A damaged component store can break driver installers in odd ways.

  12. ok so make sure you picked teh right architecture and the right OS family. A package meant for a different Windows edition, or a server/workstation branch, will refuse with the same generic text.

oof some laptops use OEM-customized drivers (common on hybrid graphics) 🤦 In that case get the driver from the laptop maker's support page, or use teh generic AMD package only if it explicitly lists mobile GPUs.
