My Budget Build Lost A Big Chunk Of Performance In An Open-World RPG Overnight

  1. so annoyed rn i play an open-world RPG every evening on my budget build and know exactly how it should feel. after installing NVIDIA GeForce Graphics Driver 416.94, its noticeably choppier, frame times are all over teh place, and tonight it even crashed once:

    Fatal error

    Fatal error
The game has crashed and will now close.

    DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED
The GPU device instance has been suspended.

I havent changed any in-game settings... temps look normal... is it possible a driver update makes things this much worse, or am I imagining it? thx in advance!!

  6. ahh classic to measure properly, use a repeatable in-game benchmark or teh same route, log frame times with a tool like PresentMon or CapFrameX, and compare average and 1% lows on both drivers. One run each isnt enough.

  9. oof first rule out the obvious: on lapotps, check that teh game actulaly uses the dedicated GPU 馃槄 Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add the game's .exe, set it to High performance. driver updates can reset per-app GPU preferences.

  11. lol same thing happened to me check that the driver install didn't reset ur control panel settings (power management mode, low latency mode, V-Sync, frame caps). A clean install resets everything to defaults, which can feel like a performance change.

  14. check Power Options: a Windows update or driver installer can switch to Balanced or a battery saver profile. on laptops, also check teh manufacutrer's performance mode app.

reading release notes like its a horror novel

  16. hmmm after a driver udpate, games often rebuild their shader cache, which causes stutter for the first sessions. Give it a couple of runs, or clear the driver shader cache manually in teh control panel / %LocalAppData% cache folder and let it rebuild once.

  18. for me it was the power plan. swapped it and boom, fixed. my old thinkpad is officially haunted

  19. if measurement confirms a regression, roll back with DDU to teh previous driver, and report it to NVIDIA with your GPU, game and settings. hope that helps :)
