  1. not gonna lie this is driving me nuts quick background: new build, RX 7800 XT, everything stock, two days ago a big-budget action game started crashing about 20 minutes in with this:

    Fatal error

    Fatal error
The game has crashed and will now close.

    DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED
The GPU device instance has been suspended.

event Viewer shows a display driver error right at teh same timestamp. im not overclocking anything. before I start swappnig parts like a madman, can someone tell me where to actually look first?

i'd really like to avoid buying parts i don't need 😤 if someone can tell me which logs or settings to look at first, i'll happily report back with teh details. any ideas??

  6. As a diagnostic you can raise the GPU timeout: in regedit go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers, create a DWORD TdrDelay and set it to 8. Reboot. If the crashes stop, you know it was a timeout issue, not hardware. Remove it again once you've found the real cause.

  7. If the game offers a DX11 mode or a launch option to switch away from DX12, test with that. Also disable hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling in Settings > System > Display > Graphics once to rule it out. good luck man!

  8. yeahhh DEVICE_REMOVED almost always means the driver hit a timeout or teh card dropped off the bus 🔥 First check Event Viewer under Windows Logs > System for nvlddmkm (NVIDIA) or amdkmdag (AMD) entries at the crash time... event ID 153 or 4101 points to a driver timeout/reset rather than a dead card.

  11. Try a small negative offset before anything else. In MSI Afterburner drop the core clock by 50 to 100 MHz and test again. Many factory-overclocked cards boost a bit too aggressively in specific engines, and that shows up exactly like this.

  12. check your power cabling. if your card needs two 8-pin connectors, use two separate cbales from teh PSU, not one cable with a daisy-chained pigtail. transient spikes on a single cable can cause exactly this kinda sudden drop. fingers crossed 🤞

  13. Accepted solution

oof do a proper clean driver install: boot into Safe Mode, run DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) to wipe the old driver, then install the current stable driver with networking unplugged so Windows Update doesnt push its own version in between.

  15. @wjansen dude it was the driver after all. DDU in Safe Mode, fresh install, no crashes since. I wasted a whole weekend on this, sooo hopefully this thread saves someone elses.
