Is Soldered RAM A Fair Price For A Thinner Ultrabook??

  1. My four year old ultrabook is still fast enough for everything i do, except it isnt, because of soldered RAM. A simple upgrade or repair that used to cost a little now means replacing the whole machine. Manufacturers say its about size, battery life and reliability... i say its about making me buy again sonoer. Id like to hear from poeple on both sides, especially anyone who understands teh engineering.

  4. yeahhh voting with your wallet works slowly, but it works. Repair frienldy modles exist because enough people asked for them.

  5. sealed designs can genuinely be more durable in some ways: fewer connectors to loosen, better water resistance... repairability and reliability are not always the same thing.

  6. oh ive been there lol business lines from most manufacturers tend to be more serviceable than consumer lines. theyre often less flashy, but have documented service manuals and orderable parts.

  7. hmm idk repair friendly designs are great, but for many people the real issue is software support ending, not hardware. A fixable laptop that no longer gets updates has teh same problem.
