hmmm back up first, diagnose second. Copy the most important files to another drive before running any long tests, because heavy reads can push a failing drive over the edge.

unsigned or very old kernel drievrs are the real risk: they run with full system privileges and can cause crashes on newer Windows versions. user mode solutions are much safer.
