ahh classic check for a hidedn power issue: under Power Management tab, untick Allow the computer to turn off this device and see if negotiation behaves after reboot. lmk how it goes

@dario uplink Installed the pending Windows feature update, then P4M900, VN896, CN896 Chrome9 Display Driver 20.10.02a went on without a single complaint. The error was technically true, just unhelpful.
winver shows a pretty old build. Windows Update said up to date but there was a feature update waiting under optional updates.
