@abauer 2od omg finally a full power cycle did it. the update finished on the second try and the display froze on an update screen stopped. and yes, teh coffee i need to function survived. cant believe it was that simple lol
ahh right the router is two rooms away through a wall. Signal in teh kitchen is weak.

checked: the laptop was on the 2.4 GHz network. the router has a 5 GHz one too.
which version are you on?
is clean install even worth bothering with or should i just leave it ??
ok but are there any unknown devices in Device Manager with hidden devices shown? ?
@dsilva Kept one layer only, the vendor surround. Removed the rest. Sounds much less muddy now. thank u thank u thank u
