Accepted solution by Nico Olsen — hmmm run a disk check on teh next retsart: chkdsk C: /f, and look for disk errors in Event Viewer under System with source disk or Ntfs.…
  1. im literally losing my mind here my laptop takes forever to become usable after Windows updates. Task Manager shows this:

    Disk 0 (C:) Active time 100%

    Disk 0 (C:) Active time 100%
    Not responding

disk at 100%, and teh response time is huge... clicking anything takes ages. after 15 or 20 minutes it calms down... its a few years old with a regular hard drive. is somtehing wrong, or is this just how it is now? :/ im not suree if this is normal for an older laptop or a sign that something is about to fail... upgrading is possible, but Id like to understand teh cause first.

  2. Check teh drives health before anything else. CrystalDiskInfo shows SMART data; look at Reallocated Sectors, Pending Sectors and Uncorrectable counts. Clicking plus slowness is a warning sign.

  3. exact same thing happened to my desktop last month... make a backup before u touch the firmware, learned that the hard way

  4. open Resource Monitor (resmon), go to teh Disk tab, and sort by Total (B/sec). It shows exactly which processes and files are being read or written, which is far more usfeul than disabling services blindly.

  7. i'd disagree with re-enabling everything immediately. On a slow hard drive, scheduling Defender scans for idle times does help day to day. just my 2 cents

  8. @nico.olsen holy cow swapped the hard drive for an SSD and cloend it. The laptop boots in seconds now and disk usage is barely noticeable.
