START REQUEST REPEATED TOO QUICKLY. IS METRICS-EXPORTER.SERVICE BROKEN OR IS SYSTEMD?

Accepted solution by Liv Nakamura — Test as the service user, not root: sudo u appuser /opt/app/run.sh... permission prbolems on files or sockets show up immediately. worked…
  1. our metrics-exporter.service keeps flapping. it starts, crashes, restarts, and finally systemd stops trying:

i see status=217/USER in the status. The app logs to its own file, which stays empty, sooo it dies before it even gets going.

Id like to understand teh failure, not just add a longer restart delay and hope. How do i see what teh process prints before it dies? i feel like systemd is swallowing the one error message i actually need.

  2. Accepted solution

Test as the service user, not root: sudo -u appuser /opt/app/run.sh... permission prbolems on files or sockets show up immediately. worked for me anyway 🤷

  3. hmm idk id skip hand-writing unit files and run teh app in a container with a restart policy. fewer surprises around environment and users. just my 2 cents
