Accepted solution by Uma — lol same thing happened to me after removing .maintenance, check that the update actually completed. For a core update, a half updated…
  1. im literally losing my mind here i clicked update on WordPress core, and halfway through my laptop went to sleep. now every visitor sees this:

    Windows Update

    Windows Update
    We couldn't complete the updates.
Undoing changes. Don't turn off your computer.

    Error code: 0x800f0922

Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute. Its been way more than a mintue. The admin area shows teh same message. Im scared to touch anything in case I make it worse ;) Whats the right way to get out of this state?? Step-by-step help would be amazing, Id rather not break anything else. what am i doing wrong??

  2. ahh classic to avoid this in the future, update in smaller batches, especially large plugins like WooCommerce, and dont navigate away until u see teh success message. A staging copy is ideal for big version jumps. fingers crossed 🤞

  3. ok so during updates WordPress creates a file called .maintenance in the site root (next to wp-config.php), if the update is interrupted, teh file stays and the site stays in maintenance mode... delete it via FTP or teh file manager, it starts with a dot, so turn on 'show hidden files'. lmk how it goes

lol same thing happened to me after removing .maintenance, check that the update actually completed. For a core update, a half-updated install can cause fatal errors 🤷 Reinstall core cleanly: wp core download --force --skip-content or upload fresh wp-admin and wp-includes folders from wordpress.org over FTP (dont touch wp-content or wp-config.php). For plugins, wp plugin install plugin-slug --force does the same job. Content and settings are stored in the database, so they usually survive. fingers crossed 🤞

  5. is maintenance even worth bothering with or should i just leave it ?

  6. Id restore from the hosts backup instead of piecing together a half-finished update, especially for WooCommerce. Database migrations can be half-applied too.
