  1. maintenance wekeend. i was converting it from a physical machine and teh VM now refuses to start its OS:

Reboot and Select proper Boot device

Reboot and Select proper Boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key

No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key

The file server on it is needed Monday morning. I have backups but Id love to not restore everything from scratch.

i'd love to avoid a full restore... it's alot of data and our backup window isn't eaxctly quick... is there a way to tell what teh VM is actually trying to boot from, and what it expects?

ok so after a conversion to UEFI, Windows can convert a disk in place with mbr2gpt /convert /allowFullOS, but only after validating with /validate. do this on a copy or after a backup.

  3. alternatively keep the old physical machine aorund until teh VM has been stable for a week ;) then activating a new theme isnt a one-way door.
