short version: for teh modded game: mod managers often store absolute paths to teh game folder. after moving, open teh manager and update the game path, or itll keep trying to deploy files to teh old location 😤 some managers also keep their own staging folder on teh system drive, which you might wanna move as well since thats often surprisingly large. lmk how it goes

  1. ok weird one just added a secnod SSD cuz my system drive is almost full, mostly from games... my internet is slow, sooo redownloading a few hundred gigabytes is not smth I wanna do.

is it safe to just cut and paste the game folders to the new drive? I use a couple of different launchers and I'm worreid about breaking installs, losing saves, or messing up some of the mods I've installed in one game.

Anyone done this recently? Whats the cleanest approach?? what am i doing wrong??

  2. happy to help with this one xD @kofi_cipher is the modded game one where you installed mods manually into the game folder, or through a mod manager?

  3. hmmm both drives are internal NVMe. The modded game uses a mod manager, and i just checked: its staging folder is on teh system drive and its huge. fingers crossed 🤞

  5. @polarloop all moved, saves backed up first. Remembered to update the path in teh mod manager and moved its staging folder too. The modded game loads exactly as beofre.

  6. Well. Saves are worth checking separately before you touch anything. A lot of games keep them under ur user folder, things like Documents\My Games, %APPDATA% or %LOCALAPPDATA%, not in the install folder. Others use cloud sync, and a few really do store saves next to the executable.

Back up whatever u find first. It takes five minutes and saves a lot of grief.

  7. copy, dont cut. keep the original until youve confirmed the game luanches from the new location and the launcher is happy. then delete the old copy.

If a transfer gets interrupted halfway through a cut operation you can end up with files split across two drives, which is the one scenario that actually forces a redownload.
