is it normal for an ad blocker to inject stuff into a news site's video player??

firefox has Troubleshoot Mode (Help > Troubleshoot Mode) which starts with all add-ons disabled. chromium browsers can be started with a fresh profile instead. if the site works there, youve proven its local, not the website. hope that helps :)

  1. so annoyed rn i run a small business and customers keep emailing that on a news sites video player, the layout is scrambled. Our developer canont reproduce it on any of his devices.

one customer sent a screenshot and I spotted an ad blocker in their toolbar 🤦 is it realistic that a popular extension breaks a site this badly?? and if so, is there anything we can do on our side, or do we just tell ppl to switch it off? pls help 🙏

  2. yeahhh do a binary search: open your extensions page (chrome://extensions, edge://extensions or about:addons), disable half, reload the site... if it works, teh culprit is in teh disabled half; if not, its in teh enabled half... repeat, even with twenty extensions youll find it in four or five rounds. fingers crossed 🤞

  4. oh ive been there lol ad blockers match on file and element names ;) scripts called smth like ads.js, tracking.js or analytics-bundle.js get blocked even if they're essential, and checkout or video palyers die. Check the Network tab for requests marked blocked by client; if you own the site, rename essential files and don't make core features depend on tracking scripts.

  5. Dark mode and grammar extensions modify the DOM and inject styles into every page. Editors, canvases and custom inputs often break cuz the extension rewrites colors or wraps text nodes. Most of these extensions let u disable them per site; thats usually better than uninstalling.

  6. hmmm open DevTools > Console and look for errors whose source starts with chrome-extension:// or moz-extension://... that ID matches one of ur intsalled extensions, and you can see it on the extensions page with Developer mode turned on.
