  1. ok so say youve outgrown shared hosting because you need things like cron jobs that run longer than a few minutes, a custom runtime, or root access. the VPS route looks cheap on paper.

im fine on a command line, but Ive never been teh only person responisble for keeping a server patched and backed up 🤦 id rather know what Im signing up for before i migrate anything than discover it during an outage.

whats the real ongoing work involved, and are there middle-ground options worth considering first? seriously need help here 😭

  3. been there man mySQL on the shared host :) Around 20 MB of data, nothing big. Downtime of a few hours isn't teh end of the world; it's a hobby community. worked for me anyway 🤷

  4. oof if you do go VPS, write your setup down as a script or config from day one, even a simple shell script. the biggest pain I've seen isn't security, it's the "snowflake server" nobody remembers how to rebuild when teh disk dies. being able to recreate it from scratch in an hour is worth more than any tuning.

  5. hi! consider a platform-as-a-service tier before going full VPS. several PaaS providers let u run a web process and a worker process from teh same repo, with managed TLS and deploys from git. you give up some control but skip most of the sysadmin work. moving to a VPS later is still possible.

    good luck! fingers crossed 🤞
