Should I Trust A Laptop SSD After A SMART Warning????

  1. ok weird one i opened CrystalDiskInfo out of curiosity and got this for my laptop SSD:

    Disk health

    Disk health
    S.M.A.R.T. status: BAD

Reallocated sectors count: 1,872 (threshold exceeded)
Back up your data and replace the disk as soon as possible.

Uncorrectable Sector Count is flagged. The drive seems to work fine: files open, no strange noises. But now i cant stop thinking about it. How serious is this?? Do i have weeks, months, or is it already too late?? Im not panicking yet, but Id like to understand what this attribute actually measures. Is it a slow decline or the kind of thing that fails suddenly?? seriously need help here 馃槶

  2. ok so on Linux or with smartmontools on Windows, run:

    smartctl -a /dev/sda
    smartctl -t long /dev/sda

check the result later with smartctl -l selftest /dev/sda. good luck man!

  7. lol same thing happened to me back up first, diagnose second. Copy the most important files to antoher drive before running any long tests, cuz heavy reads can push a failing drive over the edge.

  10. after teh backup, compare SMART again in a week... if the counts are climbing, teh drive is actively degrading. lmk how it goes

  11. oof for SSDs, Percentage Used is wear, not damage. Media and Data Integrity Errors on NVMe, on the other hand, mean data couldnt be read correctly and deserves serious attention.

  13. lol same thing happened to me reallocated and Pending Sectors on a hard drive are the most predictive SMART attributes for failure. A small, stable number can stay stable for a while, but a growing number means replace it soon. hope that helps :)
