SMART ATTRIBUTES: REALLOCATED SECTORS, WEAR LEVEL AND MORE

  1. im literally losing my mind here leanred something cool today: SSDs count how much data has been written to them over their lifetime 馃槄 in teh SMART data theres "Total Host Writes" or "Data Units Written" for NVMe. compare it to the TBW rating in the spec sheet and you get a rough sense of wear.

mine is at a tiny fraction after two years, so all the warnings about SSDs wearing out quickly were overblown for my use... has anyone actually worn one out?

  2. Is it an HDD or an SSD? The important attributes differ. ??

  3. ahh classic the simple "OK" status from Windows only flips when the drive itself declares failure. Detailed attributes often show problems earlier, so look at both. good luck man!

  6. ahh classic for HDDs, rising Reallocated Sector Count, Current Pending Sector or Uncorrectable Sector Count are the big red flags. Back up immediately if those grow. worked for me anyway 馃し

  8. some USB enclosures dont pass SMART data through. if a tool shows nothing for an external drive, thats often why.

my pc fans sound like a jet taking off but sure

  10. oof SMART isnt a guarantee. drives can fail suddenly without warnings, which is why backups matter more than monitoring.

  14. Never knew my SSD tracked total writes. Just checked and I'm way below the rating. Relieved.

  15. ok so NVMe drives report a standardized health log: Percentage Used, Available Spare, Media and Data Integrity Errors. smartctl -a shows it nicely.
