GIT LG: THE ALIAS THAT TURNS GIT LOG INTO A BEAUTIFUL BRANCH GRAPH

  1. guys pls help i type git status about a hundred times a day :) Then i learned Git supports aliases. One command:

    git config --global alias.st status

now git st works. my favorite is a pretty log: git config --global alias.lg "log --oneline --graph --decorate --all". Running git lg gives a compact graph of every branch... these live in ~/.gitconfig, so they follow you if you sync your dotfiles, also learned git checkout - (or git switch -) jumps back to teh previous branch. small things, huge quality of life. what am i doing wrong??

  3. be careful with aliases that hide destructive commands. undo with --soft is safe, --hard is not. good luck man!

  5. git config --get-regexp alias lists all ur aliases in the terminal. worked for me anyway 🤷

nothing is more permanent than a temporary workaround
